Woody Allen is that rare filmmaker whose literary gifts are equal, if not superior, to his visual ones. Not only has he written the screenplays to all of his dozens of movies, he has also published many award-winning short stories and books of humor. Though he started off making and starring in films that were largely slapstick and physical humor, in the late 1970's Allen's work became deeper and more philosophical. ANNIE HALL, which won the Academy Award for "Best Picture" in 1977, was the first of these more sophisticated works, followed by INTERIORS, MANHATTAN, and STARDUST MEMORIES. These four screenplays are collected in FOUR FILMS OF WOODY ALLEN, an indispensable volume for anyone interested in the evolution and craft of a master screenwriter at the top of his game.
