The relationship between photograph and scripture is the theme of this study. It questions how this relationship has been determined since the 19th Century in the practical-theoretical sense and in works of artistic photography throughout the 20th Century to achieve its most recent re-statements with digitalisation. Crossing a mediatheory-based perspective with a mapping of history, Goldbach focuses his subject within the intersection of the two lines of enquiry: one being the conception of photography as a new and different form of language and the other being concrete photographic images of scripture - amongst others with Brassa???, L???szl??? Moholy-Nagy, Walker Evans, William Klein and Andreas Gursky. The relationship of photography and scripture is traced coherently for the first time on a level of technical and discourse history as well as on a systematically formal and aesthetically poetological level.
