They provided views into Willcox's Detroit childhood, his cadetship at West Point, his service in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and his post-Civil War experiences in the West. The Civil War, however, was the major event in Willcox's life and is the focus of this book; he was on the field at Bull Run, was confined to Libby Prison, and dined with Abraham Lincoln.
