Master thriller writer and worldwide Number 1 bestseller John Grisham takes you into the heart of America's Deep South with a collection of stories connected by the life and crimes of Ford County: a place of harsh beauty where broken dreams and final wishes converge. A mercy mission that is hilariously sidetracked by human weakness; a manipulative death row inmate with one last plea; a small town divorce attorney who suddenly hits pay dirt; a man that sets out to break a casino to revenge a broken heart; a kidnapped lawyer who is confronted with one of his previous cases at gun point; a conman who preys on the rich and elderly; the boy dying of AIDS who finds mercy across the tracks in downtown Clanton: the sum total of human life is brilliantly captured in Grisham's unique evocation of lives lived and lost in Mississippi. Frequently moving, often hilarious, and always entertaining, "Ford County" brims with the same page-turning quality and irresistible narrative of his previous bestsellers, and is proof once more why John Grisham is our most popular storyteller.

Ford County, a collection of short stories by John Grisham, showcases both his strengths and weaknesses as an author. On one hand the stories are taunt, clever, well thought out, and well told. A wild night dooms three young men?s lives forever, a lawyer plots to escape his dismal life, a professional whistleblower makes a lucrative living working in retirement homes, and the victims of a corporate lawyer plot their revenge: these are all highly enjoyable tales and one could easily imagine them as movie plots or TV episodes.
As true short stories, however, they fail to go beyond the predictable. There is no moral complexity or literary nuance. In a genre where symbolism and allusion are as important as plotting and characterization, Ford County seems a little?empty.
Entertaining yes, thought provoking, not so much.

Ford County- Entertaining read
Although John Grisham is most known and appreciated for his novels involving law and courtroom happenings of which I enjoyed all his bestsellers I also became to appreciate his other story-telling books which I also find most entertaining. I'm thinking of A Painted House and Playing for Pizza, which I enjoyed reading a lot. Ford County is a compilation of such stories which are set out of the courtroom but which are nevertheless most entertaining. I highly recommend this and the other two titles I mentioned for a good read. Grisham sure knows how to keep you reading with anticipation. He can't finish his novels fast enough and sadly I've read all the ones that are published. Looking forward to his next book whatever that may be. Hope it's as good as The Testament, still one of my favorites from his hand. Glad I bought Ford County in anticipation of his next best seller.

Short but not always sweet
I'm a big Grisham fan and have read most of his offerings, some with more enthusiasm than others, although looking back the underlying message was sometimes more poignant in the less entertaining stories. I've read a number of short story books and on an average I'd like maybe 40% of the tales, in Grishams' new book "Ford County" they're all good. Vibrant, entertaining, and very relevant in America today, not just in Ford County. A montage of thought provoking inroads into the bias, fear, and uninformed viciousness alive and well in America today, while at the same time vastly entertaining. All I can say is Bravo.
