Chaplain Bev Barnett was born near Bristow, IA. In 1940 his family moved to Houghton, NY, next to Houghton College and Preparatory. His parents built an ice cream parlor called the Pantry. From '40 to '49, Bev worked as a "soda jerk" in the Pantry while attending high school and college. As a high school senior, Bev sensed a "call" to the Gospel ministry and became a ministerial major in college. He met his classmate, Margie Miller, and they married in '48. Bev pastored a rural church near Lyndonville, NY, while Margie taught school. In '50 Bev enrolled at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky with Margie teaching school in Lexington. In his senior year, Bev wrestled with how and where he was to minister after graduation. The Lord led him into the military chaplaincy. He served as an Air Force Chaplain for 28 years. A son, Mark, and daughter, Deanne, were born into their home. After retiring in 1981, he served on the pastoral staff of two churches, the Clearfield Community Church, Utah, and the Marysville, CA, First Presbyterian Church. They retired in Lake Wildwood, Penn Valley, CA, though Margie taught school for 10 more years. While serving as a chaplain, Bev earned a MA in Counseling from Chapman College, a MS in Speech Communication from U. of Utah and, after his retirement, he received his DMin degree from Westminster Theological Seminary in California. During retirement, Bev studied the Constitution and Confessions of the Presbyterian Church and subsequently changed his denominational affiliation to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). They have been active in the Penn Valley Community Church. Bev has authored two other books: Houghton's Pantry (1999) and Air Force Chaplain (2006). This book is a revised second edition of the earlier book.
