Pye was about two years late jumping on the folk music bandwagon, but despite the bad timing, Donegan himself is in good form on what proved to be his last new album for the label. The band isn't as tight as his '50s group (although Denny Wright is present on guitar), and the sound is fairly elaborate, complete with a female backing chorus that is recorded with surprising taste and restraint. Songs by Billy Ed Wheeler ("Blistered," "The Reverend Mr. Black") and Mike Settle ("Bound For Zion," "Where In This World Are We Going"), are covered, along with Bob Dylan's "Fare Thee Well." Donegan has a good voice and sings with a lot of passion, and had he done an album like this two years earlier he might've had a hit--as it was, he was competing with more rough-hewn, authentic sounding singers (including Dylan himself), and he just doesn't sound "folkie" enough for 1965, even if he comes off as completely rural on "The Doctor's Daughter." Note: All of the tracks on Folk Album are available on the 8-CD collection More Than "Pye In The Sky." ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
