This collection is a good historical document of the recordings of Lionel Hampton & His Orchestra during the WWII years, despite constant changing of bandmembers due to the draft. Hampton, the legendary jazz vibraphonist, was able to keep producing his trademark happy-sounding, morale-boosting records while maintaining a consistent level of quality. An interesting tidbit about this band is that it had the most instruments that had to be plugged in ever seen at the time. In addition to Hampton's vibes, Irving Ashby had an electric guitar, Vernon Alley had an electric bass, and Ray Perry even had an electric violin. Standout tracks include two versions of the famous title track; a vocal performance by a young Dinah Washington on "Blow Top Blues"; Hampton himself sings on "Hey! Ba Ba Re Bop"; while his unique two-finger piano style is showcased on "Hamp's Boogie Woogie." Definitely a worthwhile compilation with good liner notes. A recommended purchase. ~ Steven Jacobetz, Rovi
