The grief of Eli at the defeat of Israel was rendered still more overwhelming by the intelligence of the sudden death of his two ungodly sons. Thus you see the gray hairs of a father were brought in sorrow to the grave. God grant that such may not be the case with any of you! Whether or not these two young men were blessed with the kindness, love, and affection of a Christian mother in their early youth, we know not, as God does not inform us in his Holy Word. Can you conceive of anything so horrible, as to be cut off in the very prime of life, and that, too, without the least hope of future happiness? Then, "Remember, now, thy Creator, in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them." May the sad end of the father, also, be a warning to parents. Had those youths been brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, when they grew to manhood they would never have forsaken both their earthly and Heavenly Father."
