A young man who has just been acquitted of the murder of his cousin returns to face his townspeople. While he has been in jail, a newcomer to this border town has been trying to reform the old traditions which would call for vengeance. She is raped for her trouble, and the outlaw abducts her to the woods in the middle of winter, taunting the men of the town to rescue her. Another character, forced by illness to live vicariously, sees in these beginnings the promise of a great story.
