In contrast with the delicate flower, and yet the product of the same Almighty hand, appeared the notable chimney, which, detached from the main land, rises sixty feet above the water. Huge oblong rocks seem to have been thrown together by some freak of the elements, and thus in-regular order, or regular disorder, bid defiance to all who desire to scale their summits. The dangers to which we were exposed, are isot always attendant upon the voyage up this stream. In low water it can be ascended with comparative e.-3e, and small boats have even gone up the rapids to the foot of the falls. The stream here is so narrow, and such is the position of the warehouse, seen nearly a mile below, that it seems to occupy the entire width, and impresses one as being the terminus of navigation, if not of land conveyance. One mile accomplished, and the most desperatj of all efforts must be made, for here was a bend in the river, around which the waters raged with madness. A few quick words passed between the men, and " Now mind your oars--we are in it" was followed by the determined stroke of the oars; when u Danger is over " enabled us for the first to breathe freely; and swift as an arrow we shot across the river, and heartily rejoiced to stand on terra fir-ma. From this point the rapids proper commence, so that all merchandize must be discharged at the warehouse; and so narrow is the stream, that boats coming here must hack out for half a mile.
