Seller's Description:
Fine. Book First edition. Small octavo. [6], 299pp. Original dark green pictorial cloth stamped and lettered in gilt on spine and front cover, covers with beveled edges. Owner's bookplate. The slightest of bubbling to small portion of cloth on rear cover. A fine copy. The author (1840-1923), a member of a distinguished New Jersey family, moved to California for his health (1875), for which reason he lived outdoors as much as possible while writing for Los Angeles and San Diego newspapers. He wrote several books and was most enthusiastic about California, especially San Diego which he labeled "America's Italy." The work offered here covers the vast abundance of wild birds, fish and game in California (The Valley Quail of California; The Mountain Trout; In the Heart of Cucamunga, a June Buck, Deer Hunting, etc.). [Cowan: p.655].
