On investigation it proved to be a small child, who, it was explained, had come there with her parents from the Lao country some years before. She had gone to bed across the lagoon, when she caught the distant note of the ken, and nothing would do but she must come out and listen to the old music. It brought the beloved memories crowding back, and she was sobbing out her home-sick little heart. Poor child! I often wondered whether she ever heard the music she loved again, or died, as too many of the Lao do away from home, longing for the far-off mountains.
