This book was such an amazing read I'm wondring what other great books out there I may be overlooking. Written by a Jewish astrophysicist during the Soviet years it gives an unforgettable account of the author's encounters with life in the Soviet Union. I grew up in Russia when the Soviet Union was already falling apart, but a lot of Shklovsky's tales seemed so familiar in spirit. I think fallen as the Soviet empire is now much of it spirit still lives on in its people, this book would definitely help you understand a lot more about the Soviet era and Soviet people in general. But that's not even the main attraction of the book. I simply enjoyed each and every story in it, written with intelligence and verve. I only wish such books would be chosen by schools as a must read to learn about other countries. Who cares what the population or the capital of the counry is, here're the actual living and breathing account of life therein. And a fascinating one at that.
