Not illustrated. 1900 Excerpt: ... mother left Boston in January, 1899, to avoid arrest for embezzlement, and have not been heard from since. The child was in a pitiable condition when received; there was a recent fracture of the left humerus, also one of the left femur, and he was unable to move either limb. There was no splint or other apparatus to keep the limbs in position, and the child cried out with pain at every movement. Splints were applied to the fractured limbs, he was placed at board in a family, and improved rapidly. The splints were removed in about three weeks, the fractures were well united, and he is now in good condition, --fat, healthy, and happy. M. C, M. C, sisters. One was born September 28, 1896, the other January 27, 1898, both illegitimate. The younger child weighed twelve pounds, the older less, when taken into the custody of the State Board, August 8, 1899. Both children showed evidence of most cruel and heartless neglect, being emaciated and half-starved, and nearly naked. The older child had been seriously ill for some days, and died August 11, of pneumonia. The other had several large bruises on her body, and was so feeble that her life was in danger for several weeks. She was kept in Boston until she was well enough to be sent to the country. She has since had measles, but is now plump and well. The mother of the children is a widow, and has had four legitimate children. The woman from whom the children were removed had been paid $5 a week regularly for their board by their relatives, who had also supported their mother. F. Born August 19, 1896, and committed to the custody of the State Board of Charity June 16, 1899. This child was abandoned by her parents and left locked up in an attic.
