The South Canyon Fire of 1994 surely is the watershed event in firefighting in the late 20th century, and its effects and lessons are still with us. Fire on the Mountain captures the events of that day, July 6, on the hot, dry slopes of Storm King Mountain in western Colorado where 14 firefighters, smokejumpers and hotshots, would be engulfed by unforgiving flames. The path to the site where the 14 died is well-worn by the boots of firefighters and many others who are still drawn to the memory of what happened there and by the living spirit of those who fell. May they never be forgotten.
