Just as a historical novel of the Civil War, Austin does a good job in her writing of this book. The gruesome facts of war are by no means belittled as main characters Julia Hoffman and Phoebe Bigelow face the terrors of battles and their aftermath.
However, though the romance was interesting at the commencement, the conclusion left much to be wanted. The morality of Julia's love was questionable at best, and the wrapping up of Phoebe's romance was like a douse of freezing water to the face.

The best!
This is the second book in the Refiner's Fire Series, by Lynn Austin. This one is about two girls, a Northern belle who becomes a nurse to catch the eye of a preacher, but as she sees the horrors of war and helps out with the wounded soldiers. She finds out who she really is. The other is a backwoods girl who disguises herself as a guy and goes in the Union army. She sees the horror of war first hand and even kills people. Will she be able to chose love over bitterness and find the strength to go on? This book is so good.
