It's July 26th, 2020: Three families in one apartment building meet head-on with their own issues of alcohol and substance abuse, violence, and death. While across the street Sylvia watches the world through her window, struggling with her own anxiety. Down the street, a church is beginning its Sunday rituals and a car is speeding unaware toward a young girl. Set during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and told through the eyes of the main characters, Fifteen Minutes on Illinois Street highlights private pandemic experiences and societal ramifications. The characters are of diverse ages and races making the story even more relatable to readers. Every person is spurred on by an urgent need to adapt to new ways of functioning when closeness to others could be life-threatening. This book is about the human capacity for compassion and continued existence when the way the world operates as we know it is suddenly crippled. While the story depicted is not real, all the pandemic-related issues are accurate and documented in the reference section of the book. The book is useful to engage conversations with others especially targeted for students of sociological theory, social psychology, social work, and public health and welfare but equally compelling for individual readers and book groups. Editorial Reviews: I used this book as an assignment for my Intro into Social Work Course. Great results! Students enjoyed it. We were able to discuss macro and micro topics. This book offers a timely application for our field. I will be using the book in more classes . University instructor Z. Gantumur MSW Teaching this book in the high school classroom gave my students the chance to step outside of their lives and begin to understand the cascading effect the pandemic has had across the world. Building an empathic classroom is crucial in this time of differentiated instruction and inconsistent access to the physical classroom, and this text facilitated authentic conversation about real-world issues that matter most to our children right now.
