It is a more accurate description of the field trip Tom and his classmates take to an old Colonial village during their stay at the quaint HogPenny Inn. The horror begins that night with a frantic visit to his room by his girlfriend, Lori, who claims that something terrible has happened in the girls sleeping quarters in the inn. Urging him to come and see if he can help, Tom arrives in front of a previously locked room that looks like a scene from a horror movie! It has been completely ransacked and is awash in blood! But the most shocking thing that it is now completely deserted, despite the fact that the girls had heard the sounds of a dreadful struggle emanating from the room. By the time anyone was able to force the door open, it had been deserted, which leaves Tom feeling as baffled as everyone else! After all, a careful inspection of the room reveals to him that it is completely windowless; how could the girl and her attacker have vanished without a trace?? For the rest of the night, the terrified inhabitants of the inn, including its owners find themselves sticking together and staying in the downstairs living room in the hopes of keeping anyone else from being attacked... or disappearing into thin air. But it does not stop the terror from escalating as anyone with any reason to leave the room goes missing. With the guests dwindling, Tom knows it is up to him to figure out who... or what... is behind this seemingly impossible nightmare in the hopes of saving others, including himself, from becoming the next victims! It has now been years since I read this 90s YA horror novel, but I remember that it immediately became a favorite because of its original plot and stunning and appealing blend of horror and mystery! Even now, I would recommend this underrated shocker to any and all fans of 90s YA horror fiction. It is easily as good as any Point Horror novel or any book written by the masterful Lois Duncan!
