While not a full-fledged musical, it is encompassed by music, enough to have allowed for two separate albums. It features "A Dream Worth Keeping" sung by Sheena Easton, Elton John's "Some Other World," and "Life Is a Magic Thing" performed by Johnny Clegg. The songs are lighter and more pop-driven than Disney soundtracks from the '90s, but they are not childish. Even "Raining Like Magic," sung by renowned childrens' artist Raffi, will appeal to adults, because it is dreamlike and fanciful as opposed to rinky-dink kid fluff. If anything, the producers of the soundtrack have some answering to do for extensive lines referring to jock itch in Robin Williams' performance on "Batty Rap," and the peculiar "I feel good, a special kind of horny" in Tim Curry's "Toxic Love." We might not find lines like those slip through on a Disney soundtrack, but Ferngully offers a reason for existing other than merchandising -- to teach the value of the rainforest and, more importantly, of life itself in every form.
