I would recommend everyone read this book. Everyone, I don't care if you're already in a relationship and don't think you are afraid of closeness. I think men mostly get blamed for a fear of committment and fear of intimacy but women and men are guilty of it. We choose our partners based on our hopes and fears. We hope they will fix us but fear they will leave us or smother us. Reading Fear of Intimacy helps one see how they themselves are ruining relationships based upon their fears. We sabatoge ourselves when we get close to another whether in friendships or significant relationships. We have too high of expectations on others while we blatantly ignore what it is we're doing to mess up. We expect our relationships to fulfill us and last forever and when they don't maybe we blame ourselves or the other person not getting to the heart of what happened. Fear of intimacy explains the process and a little bit about how to fix it. Basically you need to be emotionally mature which means fulfilling yourself first so you don't get butthurt at the slightest infraction. Learn that love is allowing yourself to do what makes you happy while allowing another to do what makes them happy and that is what builds the closeness we all crave.
