I LOVE this book!!! My mother got this as a wedding present 50 years ago. I got the book when she died. The recipes taste so good! Almost everything is made from scratch which is great. The only problem I've had is with the bread recipes. I follow it to the letter, but the bread does not rise. It could be that over the years they changed the formulation of the yeast I'm using, I don't know. Also, some ingredients are a little out of date. However, I have gotten so many compliments on the dishes I've made from this book. It can be a little time consuming, but it's worth it. My book fell apart, so I bought one for myself and for each of my sisters for Christmas. I think They are going to love it!

One of my top favorites
Who doesn't love delicous country meals?
This book is old but mighty fine. I love all of my Farm Journal cookbooks and use them for research as well as for cooking. When I try recipes that disappointed and want to find one that doesn't I turn to Farm Journal books first. Tried and true is best; Farm Journal cookbooks never disappoint me.

Farm Journal's Country Cookbook
There are so many delicious mouth-watering recipes included in this cookbook. The majority of which are made from scratch. And most certainly worth the effort. Recipes are from 1947 through 1959. And, the revised enlarged edition (1972) has omitted some recipes and added 850 more recipes. Just to give you some idea of what you are in store for, let me just mention Chapter 10 Relish Sampler. "Relishes do for meats and poultry what strawberries do for shortcakes, fudge frostings for cakes". This particular chapter includes the above mentioned relishes plus jams, jellies, marmalades and fruit honey. As well as home made pickles and ketchup. There are recipes for formal (and informal) wedding cakes, Ambrosia Chiffon Cake and even Coffee Butter Frosting...... In the preface it states "country cooking at it's best". And I wholeheartedly agree. The only downside is having the time to create these appealing and satisfying recipes. And substitutions need to be made. For instance, the use of lard in cakes etc If you love to collect or prepare recipes, or just love to eat, this is the ideal cookbook for you...
