I have been enthralled by all of Lee Smith's novels and stories since Black Mountain Breakdown. I have just caught up with this predecessor to Lee's Virginia and North Carolina novels, much more than regional fiction. This one takes play in the town of Speed, Alabama a it prepares for its sesquicentennial, and as its residents prepare for god-all-knows-what. If you do not know Ms Smith, make yourself a reservoir-full of lemonade, adorn yourself with a floppy hat, sit on the porch swing, and start on the first of about a dozen great reads.
