The wisest and most well-chosen Marlene Dietrich compilation ever produced outside of France or Germany, Falling in Love Again may not cater to the consumer who always wants to hear Dietrich singing in English, but it is the first to include her best performances no matter the language or time period. Beginning with the title track, sung in German, the disc mirrors all of her film successes, starting with 1930, which brought The Blue Angel ("Blonde Women") and Morocco ("Give Me the Man"), plus 1939's illustrious Destry Rides Again ("You've Been in Love Before" and her perennial "The Boys in the Back Room") and 1948's A Foreign Affair ("Illusions"). Interspersed with these are a variety of great songs not tied to her films, many of them standards, such as "Mein Mann Ist Verhindert (Miss Otis Regrets)" and "Sag' Mie Adieu (Time on My Hands)." Even "Too Old to Cut the Mustard," the barrelhouse duet curiosity that paired Dietrich with Rosemary Clooney, appears near the end of the program. And, as a sop to Anglos, it wraps up with the title track, this time sung in English. ~ John Bush, Rovi
