Fall River in its heyday was the largest producer of cotton cloth in the world. Thousands of workers flocked here from Quebec, Ireland, England, Portugal and the Azores to work in the huge granite and brick mills which ran round the clock turning out yarn and cloth. While the immigrants crowded into tenements surrounding the mills, the mill owners prospered and built stately mansions in the north end of town. As well as being at one time the Cotton King of the world, Fall River was also home port to the most elegant steamship line in the country-the Fall River Line, which plied the waters between Fall River and New York City for ninety years until it was forced out of business by the Great Depression. Although Fall River has had more than its share of hardships it has always managed to get back on its feet again. Fall River: A Pictorial History captures the history and indomitable spirit of this remarkable city in 300 photographs, many of which have never before been published. Every resident and visitor will treasure this extraordinary volume of captioned illustrations, photos, and maps, and accompanying text. It's a book to pass on to the next generation, a permanent memento of the heritage of Fall River.
