As befits a book about the CIA, this is a puzzle. Plame's writing style is so -- maybe necessarily -- bland that it undercuts the real tension of her story. She had to get the manuscript cleared by the CIA and large parts were redacted. What pulls the book together, and gives power to the story Plame has tried to tell, is the Afterword by Laura Rozen. I read Rozen's account and then thinking back to what I read in Plame's section, I often went "Oh, now I get it." Wilson comes off as a bit of a handful, while Plame is an intriguing twist on the All-American girl. I plan to see the movie, where I hope some of the drama Plame wasn't able to pull off in her writing may be supplied by the director and actors.
