From the novel cha racter Of'the System, from the multiplicity as well as tri ing nature of its regulations, some time must necessarily elapse before the recently committed prisoner can be made acquainted with them the consequence of this is, that the earlier portion Of the prisoner's confinement, that too which precedes his trial, is the most irksome and vexatious. His thoughts and attention must be occupied in acquiring a knowledge of the rules, and a readiness in practising them; or else in undergoing the various punishments to which his ignorance, his inadvertence, or his stubbornness exposes him.
