Part novel, part memoir, "Extra Virgin" is the story of two painfully pale English sisters who find themselves reveling amongst the sun-drenched olive groves and earthy inhabitants of a small Italian village. Hired to work for ten weeks to graft roses near the Riviera, board and lodging included, little does either of them know that their brief stay will stretch into infinity.

This is a charming story about two Englishwomen adjusting to life in a small community in Italy, along the lines of A Year in Provence. It is very well written and laugh-out-loud entertaining, as well as informative about that region of Italy and the pitfalls for foreigners who contemplate buying real estate. I like the subtle criticism of the increasing numbers of people who buy up properties only to spend their vacation there and not really engaging with the locals and the impact that has on the local economy.
