BMG Special Products' 2000 album Extended Versions: The Encore Collection is an abridged, resequenced repackaging of CMC International's 1999 album Greatest Hits: Live at the Fillmore, which marks an extraordinarily rapid movement to budget status for the reformed Jefferson Starship's concert album of some of its best-known songs. Paul Kantner and Marty Balin have been playing together off and on under various names -- Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, the KBC Band, Jefferson Airplane again, Jefferson Starship again -- with various partners since 1965. The aggregation heard here also includes Jack Casady, a veteran of both Jefferson Airplane and the KBC Band. Kantner is the spaced-out master of ceremonies, and Balin the lead vocalist. (There is also a female singer who approximates the sound of Grace Slick.) The two bandleaders have had better days as vocalists, but they are enthusiastic, and the band finds moments of individual expression in the familiar arrangements.
