Information on parasite genomes will be fundamental to the future directions of parasitology research. Complete parasite gene sequence data, already available for some pathogenic bacteria, will provide essential biological information and, in particular, clues to novel drug and vaccine targets. The papers in this volume summarise the current state of various parasite genome projects and the bioinformatics of parasite genome analysis, covering pathogenic bacteria, yeasts, trypanosomes and apicomplexan parasites, schistosomes and nematode pathogens of both humans and plants. The generation and handling of parasite genome data will significantly enhance the understanding of basic parasite biology and will offer novel opportunities to control parasitic diseases in humans, animals and plants.
