One of three wonderful collections centered around the mbira (thumb piano), Shona Mbira Music provides a superb overview of this branch of African Music. The gorgeous melody of the first track, "Nhemamusasa" (attractive enough to be filched later on by the Penguin Café Orchestra) is presented both in a bare-bones, instrumental format and then again with the appropriate accompanying vocals. It has the sort of percolating rhythm and general infectiousness that make one wish it would continue forever. The vocals on this and other pieces, rough by Western standards, are beautifully nuanced, heartfelt, and could provide more than a few lessons to contemporary soul and jazz singers. The entire disc travels similar territory; one lovely song to the next, the mbira and voices are entwined in delicious harmony.
