John Macquarrie's Existentialism is a first rate primer on both the concepts and history of this deep and diverse philosophy. Professor Macquarrie also compares existentialism with philosophies both past and present, thus giving the reader a proper perspective on its historical precedents and the many current varieties. Interestingly, Professor Macquarrie comes to the conclusion that existentialism is a style of philosophizing that transcends time and place rather than a monolithic, modern philosophy of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In the last chapter, Professor Macquarrie does not shy away from a critique of the dangerous excesses of existential philosophizing while acknowledging that it has 'yielded many fresh and penetrating insights into the mystery of our own human existence, and has thereby contributed to the protection and enhancement of our humanity in the face of all that threatens it today.'
