This is a very good read in its genre. But if a reader, who is a fan of the TV series, "The Artful Detective," is expecting to encounter their favorite characters, and the "class" of the settings, they will not. Brackenreid, Julia Ogden and Emily Grace are not part of the story. Both Murdoch and Crabtree are quite different physically as well as are their personality styles. As Maureen Jennings has written her novel, the people are not as refined and the times are not as clean. Among the poorer classes, their circumstances are rough and raw and probably, far more descriptively accurate in terms of the way people lived in the late 19th century. While my expectations, based on the TV series, were altered, I still found the story very compelling. And Maureen Jennings can tell a story.
