Excellent Rally is the third and highest level of AKC Rally and it is the most challenging. All exercises are performed off-leash except for the honor exercise. There are 15-20 stations, with no more than 7 stationary exercises. Handlers are only allowed to encourage their dogs verbally. Physical encouragement is not allowed at this level. Also, handlers may not use loud or harsh commands. The Excellent-level exercises include backing up three steps, while the dog stays in the heel position and a moving stand, while the handler walks around the dog. The Honor exercise is performed on leash. The dog and handler enter through the exit gate, or they may proceed directly to the Honor Station after completing the Excellent Course. The judge will indicate whether your dog is to do a sit-stay or a down-stay. They must remain in that position for the entire time it takes for the next dog to run the entire course. The judge will also instruct the handler whether they are to stand next to the dog or stand facing the dog during the Honor exercise. All dogs in the class will perform this exercise in the same way. The Honor dog is monitored by a steward, since the judge is occupied with the dog running the course. All dogs and handlers begin with a perfect score of 100. A qualifying performance indicates that the dog has performed the required exercises according to the AKC Rally Regulations. A dog and handler team is awarded a qualifying score if the team retains at least 70 points at the completion of the course. In this journal the first page for each week covers the class itself. There are places to record the goals for that training, what was learned during the class, and what you are to work on. The remaining six days allow you to record what your daily goal is, what you achieve, and any questions or concerns you may have. Also included is a course planner where you can list the information about each class: date, time, location, and so forth. There is a checklist where you can make notes on what you need to get and what to take to classes.
