I'll try to keep under the 10,000 character max. After visiting Ireland twice since 2002, it is clear that most Americans, including me, just don't get the "troubles" thing. First, we weren't taught about it in school. Second, we prejudge...with so much ethnic and religious diversity in our country...that which on the surface appears to be a mere Catholic/Protestant dichotomy just doesn't make sense, kind of like our own Civil War. Mr. McCann, with metaphor and honest storytelling, depicts how the situation into which all Irish are born is intertwined within the fabric of their lives. They cannot deny its existence or come up with an "easy" solution any more readily than US racial inequties can be solved with one fell swoop of the legislative scythe. I highly recommend this book. I have ordered multiple copies and am in the process of distributing them to friends and family. Look, I still know next to nothing about the centuries' worth of events in Ireland that have resulted in what Americans occasionally glimpe as snippets on the evening news...but, I do think it is important that I/we strive to learn more, especially if we hope to overcome the European notion that Americans are a bunch of overindulging, underachieving, self-righteous, overly-blessed snobs who blindly muck up the planet...the rest of the world be damned.
