Summary: "Constance Plyd has been waiting for months to get her husband to sign the divorce papers; she believes this is the day she has prayed for (except it's somewhat disappointing since, prior to doing so, Jimmy has filled the dishwasher with Tide and flooded her brand-new kitchen floor with mounds of foam...yet another in a long line of his idiotic mishaps) . However, before he has the chance to sign, Jimmy is stabbed in the back with a screwdriver and Constance stumbles upon his body in the garage. At the scene is the Pride demon Yeman who killed him and Shadow the Glutton demon, his accomplice. Both know that she is the Chosen One (i.e. a minor prophet) and hope that this trauma will begin her visions...the ones that will ultimately reveal the identity of the virgin that Lucifer must seduce in order to beget the Antichrist.
Nathan Garret, who abandoned Constance after a quick fling (when she was his "number 22 virgin conquest"), has returned to Dogwood County after experiencing a terrible loss as an officer in Dallas. He's matured and is now the new Sheriff of the County...and forced to question Constance, his prime suspect, despite his repeat attraction to her. At first, he finds her story unbelievable but is reluctant to arrest her. Only after Constance teams up with Frank (an angel-in-training disguised as a pink-sweater-wearing French bulldog), a militant priest and her psychic mother, (all armed with Holy Water and Dogwood blossoms to which demons are allergic) can she convince Nathan that she's telling the truth. Unfortunately, the time is getting short and the devil is coming quite close to seducing the nation's newest teen pop star phenom...will he succeed (after his terrible mishap with a goat) or will God's underdogs (Constance and Crew) save the day?
My Thoughts: I LOVE Cara Lockwood's books! This one, though a little bit more explicit/rowdy in some areas, didn't disappoint me. Expect to laugh on nearly every page of the book. Lockwood's books always have a somewhat spiritual / religious theme (even if her take is often somewhat quirky and unexpected), but this book takes that aspect of her writing to a new height. I know that it is irreverent and that some people would see it as almost blasphemous but I would have to disagree. In this age when everything goes, Lockwood shows that there is clearly a right and wrong, angels and demons, God and Satan, heaven and hell...and though her portrayal of some aspects of that truth is imaginative and impertinent, it still highlights the basic facts that God and His angels are very much in battle against Satan and that, in that battle, we play a key role as His underdogs! If we would just open our eyes in faith to the things that go on around us, we might just see these things more clearly...as Nathan finally does at the end of the book.
Plus, add in extras like her portrayal of pop stars who wear string bikinis while claiming to still be virgins and her opinion that places of torture for demons include Mega Mart (a thinly disguised Walmart) and Mary Kay and you'll be rolling on the floor. Definitely a good read.
