The music, from the late 19th and 20th centuries, certainly lives up to this description, and with the exception of the Ballade, Op. 24, of Grieg, it is not well known, perhaps even in Norway. The opening Eolsharpa ("Aeolian Harp") of Geirr Tveitt has been recorded only once before, by the composer. It's a full-scale pianistic tone poem (it also exists in an orchestral version) that evokes not only the titular harp but a host of natural scenes as well, and it primes the listener's mood for the entire delightful program. The Piano Sonata of Christian Sinding effectively combines the Grieg style with heavier German material; although it has no formal program, it seems to speak of deep natural forces with its explosions of Lisztian virtuosity.
