Handsomely bound study of English periodical literature of the 18th century centering on Addison and Steele, by the essayist and physician Nathan Drake. Decorative bookplate on vol. 1 pastedown, early gift inscription on front free endpaper dated 1814. Condition: Light rubbing to extremities, front joint and hinge starting on vol. 1, but sound, a handsome set; very good. DRAKE, NATHAN (1766-1836), literary essayist and physician, belonging to a Yorkshire family of considerable standing, was born in 1766 at York, where his father, Nathan, was an artist, and where his younger brother, Richard, was afterwards a surgeon. Drake's contributions to general literature consist chiefly of miscellaneous essays, critical, narrative, biographical, and descriptive, which were favourably received at the time of publication.
