The intention of the "Original Peoples" series is to give children of middle to lower secondary level an insight into the history and modern lifestyle of ancient peoples who still retain a distinct culture in the modern world. This book traces the history of the Eskimo (or Inuit) peoples and their migration from Asia to what is now Canada over 8,000 years ago. About half of the book is concerned with their life and problems today, and their hopes and aspirations for the future. The Eskimos (or Inuit as they prefer to be known), arrived in what is now Canada from Asia over 8,000 years ago. Their lives remained largely unchanged until the arrival of European adventurers in the 16th century. Since then, their culture has undergone a series of major upheavals, culminating in the problems of alcoholism, unemployment and depression which beset them in the 1950s and 1960s. Now in the 1980s their position has improved considerably. They run their own schools and businesses, and have their own organizations to further their interests. The author, who has spent much of his life working among the Inuit, explains how these changes have come about and tells why the Inuit are looking forward to the future with optimism.
