English summary: Contemporary Theology and Political Sciences are on the way to reinventing Erik Peterson (1890-1960) as a central figure in the discourses of 1920s to 1950s. The volumes of his Ausgewahlte Schriften give us insight into a thinking of high inner tensions, which was developed in an intellectual exchange with many important dialogue partners. First of all, Peterson's concept of the Political is of a high interest. Peterson formed this concept in a constant discussion with the famous and notorious jurist Carl Schmitt. In the early 30s their friendship and intellectual partnership broke because of their different statements to the totalized Political and the national socialist ideology. Peterson confronted the political Totalitarianism with an apocalyptical concept and image of the church as an independent public sphere, which has its main publicity through the worship in front of God's throne in the community of the earthly church and the heavenly assembly of angels. From this specific concept of publicity, Peterson got an eminently critical power of judgement against political totalitarianism, which he viewed as the consequence of self fulfilment of modernity. On his way, Peterson converted from Lutheran Protestantism to Roman Catholicism in 1930. Until today his strongly liturgical and dogmatically-shaped theology is a challenge for the search for a forthcoming ecumenical church. German description: Seit einigen Jahren erst wird Erik Peterson (1890-1960) als eine der Schlusselfiguren der deutschen und europaischen Theologie und Geistesgeschichte neu entdeckt. Die sukzessive erfolgende Ausgabe seiner Ausgewahlten Schriften gewahrt Einblick in die spannungsreichen Prozesse eines Denkens, das sich im Austausch mit vielen bedeutenden Gesprachspartner der 1920er bis 1950er Jahre entwickelte. Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei der eigentumliche Begriff des Politischen, wie Peterson ihn in zunachst enger Verbindung mit Carl Schmitt formulierte, an dem dann aber auch unter den Bedingungen des nationalsozialistischen Totalitarismus diese Beziehung zerbrach. Peterson stellte dem totalisierten Politischen seiner Zeit eine Ekklesiologie entgegen, die die Kirche als selbstandige politische Grosse in der eschatologischen Offentlichkeit des himmlischen Gottesdienstes vor dem Thron Gottes verankerte. Von dieser spezifischen Offentlichkeit der Kirche her gewinnt Peterson eine ungemein kritische Urteilskraft gegenuber den totalitaren Ideologien des 20. Jahrhunderts. die er als konsequente Selbstvollendung der Moderne verstand. Auf diesem Denkweg entzweite sich Peterson immer tiefer mit der evangelischen Kirche und Theologie seiner Zeit, um schliesslich im Jahr 1930 zum romischen Katholizismus zu konvertieren. Lange Zeit vergessen, wird Peterson heute wieder entdeckt und in Theologie, Philosophie und politischer Wissenschaft in aktuellen Diskursen gelesen. Seine von Liturgie und Dogma her formulierte Theologie ist eine bleibende Herausforderung fur eine okumenische Kirche der Zukunft. Die vorliegende Arbeit unternimmt es als erste Monographie im Raum der evangelischen Theologie, den Weg Petersons, fokussiert auf das zentrale Thema der Offentlichkeit und des Politischen, nachzuzeichnen.
