At 16, Sabet is not happy with his life in the Afghan clan and tribal society into which he was born. But one dream gives him hope. He has heard that there is a land called Etazoni to which everybody escapes to find liberty, freedom, justice and peace. As he is growing up, he keeps searching for this dreamland. With his activist friends, who are engaged in the 1940s pro-democracy movement and politics, he rebels against the absolute monarchy and its extremist ideology. When things go badly, he and his friends are about to be arrested and they decide to escape. Along their escape path they experience serious challenges and unexpected surprises. They begin to share stories only to discover that their individual hopes and dreams are so different that they begin to doubt their ability to carry out their original plans. Sabet's compatriots tell him that the land of his dreams does not exist anywhere in the world, and that it has never existed in all of human history. They begin arguing among themselves endangering their lives at various points along their escape route. But after entering the most dangerous terrain of all, the Desert of Death, the fighting among them threatens to become deadly. But Sabet's dream of finding his promised land sustains him and enables him to persevere. Eventually, each one of his compatriots goes on his separate way, leaving Sabet alone in his struggle to attain his dream.
