Richard Etulain has done an excellent job in bringing to life one of the most fascinating men who ever lived. And the fact the man is a writer makes it incredible. Mr. Etulain follows Ernest Haycox's life as a writer from his early beginnings a "pulp" story producer to the end of a career which saw such novels as The Adventurers, and The Earthbreakers, two outstanding historical works about Oregon and the Great Northwest. Mr. Etulain breaks down many of the Haycox novels and explains the creative process by which Haycox worked. A great piece of work, including a limited bibliography. Highly recommended.
September 21, 2017--This is an addition to the original review which was on the Boise State Western Writers Series booklet of 49. pages. This "new" edition is more complete and covers nearly all of Haycox"s major works with indebt analysis and opinion as to why each succeeded or failed. It is a good companion book to go along with two other Haycox studies--"On a Silver Desert" by Ernest Haycox Jr. and "Ernest Haycox" the Twayne's United States Author's Series by Stephen Tanner. This hardcover edition also has a complete bibliography of all of Ernest Haycox's published works--a quite extensive list. Of course there are parts and opinions with which I don't necessarily agree, but as a whole it is still an excellent work about one of the most influencial authors of the twentieth century even though Mr. Haycox had no idea he was being such an influence on the next generation of "western" authors. Still highly recommended.
