Another score of 10 for John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series. Erak's Ransom brings all of your old friends from earlier books together, this time taking them into the desert. Never dull and always intriguing, these books should be on everybody's book reading adventure list. My teenage son and I were introduced to the Ranger's Apprentice by a retired teacher. We're read each one, waiting with anticipation for the next one. So far, we've never been let down by the plot or the characters.

Seventh Success
Another exciting Ranger?s Apprentice tale is here in the seventh addition to this series. In the book, Will, Halt, and certain other familiar characters must traverse the desert in order to pay ransom for their Skandian (rather equivalent to a Viking) friend, Erak, who has been captured. However, things do not proceed as straightforward as they might have, as the party (with the exception of Will) is captured by another hostile group and prepared for execution. As one might have guessed from this scenario, suspense is very apparent in the story.
It should be noted that Erak?s Ransom takes place before books five and six, and might be read before them. It tells one final story of the time up to Will?s graduation and achievement of the Silver Oakleaf (the mark of a full-fledged Ranger).
Readers seeking adventure in the form of a well-written novel will look no further than Book 7 of this international bestselling series. Ranger?s Apprentice contains plenty of action and some surprisingly strong moments. For example, the bond between Will and his horse, Tug, is evident as Will does everything in his power to find and regain possession of his horse and his friend, eventually forced to make a desperate gamble to save him. Will?s skill and loyalty are tested again as he races to save his friends from death at the hands of an executioner. Never a dull moment, Erak?s Ransom is the sort of book that will take its well-deserved place in the minds and hearts of readers of all ages.
