Rich in domestic architecture, Kent contains a wealth of distinctive cottages, yeomen's halls, manor houses and ecclesiastical palaces. "Kent Houses" is a fully illustrated survey of domestic architecture as it developed here from the 13th century to the 1990s. The book opens with a discussion of the county, its history and its builders. Of particular interest here are the everyday houses of yeomen. These structures built between the 14th and 17th centuries were to emerge as a major contribution to domestic architecture, not just in England but in all Europe. The text explains the peculiar circumstances that enabled Kent yeomen to build in this lavish way. The second chapter is devoted to design, technique and materials - timber, of course, but also stone and brick. The third chapter concentrates on typical and distinctive features of houses themselves. A parish by parish Gazetteer covering 210 parishes describes about l000 houses in some detail. The book is illustrated throughout by several hundred drawings and photographs, many in colour, specially prepared by the author for this book. The book is aimed at designers, architects, historians, tourists, house buyers and anyone interested in domestic architecture.
