The book traces the history of the disease, from its discovery by Professor J.N.P. Davies in Uganda in the late 1940s to its gradual global recognition as a separate entity, distinct from Loeffler's endocarditis with which it shares some end-stage features. Contributors, many of them pioneers from diverse countries such as Uganda, Ivory Coast, Brazil, Nigeria, and India, discuss their experiences and offer hypotheses on the etiology of the disease. Pathologists present autopsy and biopsy findings and clinicians discuss investigative and diagnostic features. The surgical treatment of the disease is covered in detail, and the last part of the book is devoted to experimental studies in an attempt to establish the obscure etiology and find effective means of preventing EMF.
