Excerpt from Encyclopaedia Americana, Vol. 7: A Popular Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, Literature, History, Politics and Biography, Brought Down to the Present Time; Including a Copious Collection of Original Articles in American Biography Innucrrort, in logic; a conclusion from the particular to the neral. Strict con clusrons are made mm the general to the particular. The general premise be ing true, the application to the particular case which is included in it follows with logical certainty. Induction gives only probability. I for instance, we conclude, from the earth being habitable, that the other planets are so, the conclusion is onl robable. Induction rests upon the behe that neml laws and rules are ex pressedin eparticularcase buta pos sibility always remains, that these lgeneral laws and rules are not perfectly nown An induction may be perfect or imperfect. To make it perfect, the premises must in clude all the grounds that can affect the result. If this is not the case, it is imper fect. For instance, every te ani mal lives, every a'e'rial animal lives, every aquatic animal lives, every reptile lives; therefore, every animal lives. F we now allow that there exists no animal not in cluded in the four enumerated clause, the induction is perfect.
