The special theme of this issue of Soundings is the politics of emotions. The contributors engage with the profound changes that have taken place in contemporary cultures of caring, in both the public and private spheres. They particularly focus on emotional labour, which today is an important component of many jobs - in the caring professions, but also in many other areas of work; and they discuss the emotional labour that takes place outside the public sphere, which is often undervalued. In addition there are articles on the relationship between the state and patterns of caring, on our political vocabularies of care, and on the reconfiguration of emotion, labour and politics being canvassed in discussions on the 'third way'. In the first part of the journal there is an extended essay by T.V. Sathyamurthy on South Asia in the post-indipendence priod. There is also a discussion of the concepts of universalism and particularism as reflected in some key black American texts, and an article looking at football cultures during the 1998 World Cup. Plus: A third way with teeth, South African short story, poems, the West murders, photography.
