All books by Astrid Lindgren are great, though some translations are better than others. You'll like it if you are not into the modern "political correctness thingie" (like banning toy solders in schools, etc.) The 50-60x childhood was all about a normal childhood of normal boys and girls.

bit out of date
My son who is 8 years old liked this very much although I bought it more for my 5 year old daughter. I had to skip parts as Emil is given an gun and threats to shoot his whole family if he gets shut in the wood shed one more time for misbehaving. This makes it sound worse than it is but it certainly wasn't my favourite Astrid Lindgren book. Ronia the Robbers Daughter (good for 7-8 year olds) and The Noisy Village series (good for 3-5 years old) are by far our favourites.
