There was a cattle crossing at Mustang Creek. It was miles from anywhere--plagued by deadly tornadoes, burning summers, and freezing winters, and on one had ever lived there, until Elizabeth Rettig came. Indians, trail hands and lawless men rode past on their way to fame or infamy--and because Elizabeth was young and spirited, suitors came too.

When first published years ago under the title of "The Crossing" much of what made this book was excised out by the editors, for whatever reason they had. But Will Cook wrote with a dimension that far exceeded what the editors allowed to be printed at the time. His women characters were determined, strong willed women; beautiful and seductive when need be; women who would fight for their man, their land, and their country. To believe women could not be like Elizabeth Rettig was portrayed in this book, is to think the impossible. I've read far too many journals and diaries of pioneer women; and I believe such could happen in the way Mr. Cook depicts it here. Yes, he does take some liberties with historical fact and personages but "historical" fiction always does that when it comes to time line or place and time. But young and spirited Elizabeth Rettig has life to live and she does it to the fullest on the Mustang Creek.
