The choral pieces on this CD -- anthems, hymns, odes, and service music -- support the proposition that Elgar was essentially a miniaturist who breaks the longer texts into shorter individual sections, each with its own character, rather than creating extended organic structures. Even his larger works, such as Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius, are made up of relatively short building blocks. It's perhaps this quality of fragmentation that has kept his choral music on the fringes of the English cathedral choir ...
