He was touched, if not with the sincerity of their repentance, at least with the excess of their miseries. He commanded Ifaiah to encourage their hopes. He even promisee1 them, not only that all the designs of their enemies should he rendered ahortive: hut that the two consederate kingdoms, . within three store and Jive yean, ver. 8. should: he entirely destroyed. Moreover, he gave Ahas the choice of a sign to convince himself of the truth of the promise. Ahaz was one of the most wicked kings, that ever fat on the throne of: Judah: fo that the scripture could give no. worse character of this prince, nor describe his perse verance in fin mere sully, than hy faying, that he was always Ahaz. He resused to choose aVt fvgn, not hecause he felt on of those nohle emotions, which makes a man suhmit to the testimony of God without any more proof of its truth than the testimony itself; hut hecause he was inclined to infidelity and ingratitude, and;-prohably, hecause he trustedin his ally, the king of Assyria. Notwithstanding his resufal, God gave him signs, and insormed hint, that hefore the prophet-s two children, one of whom was already horn, and the other would he horn shortly, shouldarrive at years of discretion, the two consederatekings should retreat from J, udea, and should hetentirely destroyed.
